For this project students viewed and discussed art created by indigenous people with a focus on the totem pole. Students explored the symbolism of animals and the narrative qualities imbedded in totem poles.
Following this discussion, students researched the various animals commonly used in totems and chose an animal to represent themselves based on the animal's symbolic significance. Students used these animals to create an original design that was drawn, transferred, carved, and printed using linoleum blocks.
As final step, students worked collaboratively to create complete group totems, representative of each person in the group.
