To begin this lesson, students discussed and reflected upon the work of contemporary artist Ana Serrano
. Serrano's work focuses on architecture and culture in Los Angeles, California. We used her work as a way to discuss the types of architecture the students experience and find in their own neighborhoods.
Students then chose a building of cultural or personal significance in their neighborhood to replicate. Using cardboard, paint, and various found materials. students explored various ways to manipulate these sculptural materials to achieve their desired result.
The final steps of this project required the students to create a public installation in the hallway of the school. Using their buildings, the students created a miniature representation of their neighborhood.
